Matej MIJALIC

Matej Mijalic is a Croatian violinist born in Rijeka. He started his musical education in his hometown and after his elementary school graduation enrolled on the “highly talented junior programme” at the Universitat Fur Kunst und Darstellende Kunst in Vienna under Professor Marina Sorokowa. During his time at the University, he was awarded multiple first prizes at international competitions held in Croatia such as the Croatian National Music Competition which he won for 6 consecutive years, Distant Cord Competition of which he was the absolute prize winner and the first prize at the Svirel Competition in Slovenia. After his studies in Vienna, in 2017 he enrolled at the Academy of Music in Zagreb where he studied with Professor Leonid Sorokow. In 2022 he graduated from the Academy with honours under Professor Orest Shourgot. During his studies, he performed as a soloist with the Croatian Baroque Ensemble, the Zagreb Soloists, Zagreb
Young Musicians Orchestra, MUZA Symphonic Orchestra and the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra with which he recorded Brahms violin Concerto in D major for which he was awarded the Stjepan Šulek fundation prize. Matej has studied with many renowned violinist and pedagogues such as Anton Sorokow, Jova Jordanova, Dan Zhu, Marc Bouchkov, Goetz Richter and Roman Simović. In 2019 he was the overall winner of the Lions Grand Prix competition for which he was awarded recitals in Gratz and Zagreb. In the same year, he was also the overall winner of the Young Virtuoso Competition held in Zagreb and the National Croatian Music Competition. In 2021 he was awarded the first prize and laureate prize of the Rudolph Matz Competition, MAC International Music Competition held in Los Angeles, and in the same year he was awarded the audience prize at the Fredo Livadić Music Competition in Samobor. From 2023 Matej was kindly granted a loan for a fine
violin made by Giuseppe Gagliano in 1791 on which he currently performs. He has held recitals in Croatia, Slovenia, Austria, Germany and Italy and has recorded pieces by Croatian authors, one of which, Josip Slavenski’s Slavic Sonata Matej recorded for Croatian Radio Television. involvement with chamber music and orchestral playing has taken him all around Europe’s most famous venues like the Dortmund Koncerthaus, Bozar Concert Hall, Berliner Philharmonie Concert Hall and Vatroslav Lisinski Concert Hall. As from 2023. Matej has been given a full scholarship to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London with the renowned violinist Roman Simović.
